What is Second Skin Hydrocolloid Technology?

The Elastoplast Healing Capsule Technology – also known as hydrocolloid technology – contains macromolecules which can absorb liquids like water or wound fluid, they swell and form a gel. In Second Skin Protection these Hydrocolloid particles are dispersed in an adhesive mass which gives elasticity and stickiness to the plaster.

Elastoplast Second Skin Protection features two distinct layers. The inner layer contains the hydrocolloid particles and acts as a wound pad, while the outer layer, crafted from polyurethane, is flexible and 100% waterproof; then covered by a support foil for ease of application.

When the hydrocolloid particles (sodium carboxymethylcellulose) come into contact with wound fluid (exudate), they absorb the exudate and form a viscous gel which may be visible as a ‘healing capsule’, an opaque bubble that can appear over the wound. This bubble maintains a moist microenvironment, conditions which are optimal for wound healing. Learn more on how Hydrocolloid bandages work here.

What does the Second Skin Plaster Do?

Our Elastoplast Second Skin Protection creates a moist environment that helps the wound heal faster. The plaster also has a strong hold that lasts for at least 72 hours. The plaster is thin and flexible, which means it can adapt to your movements and provide optimal comfort and protection.

Hydrocolloid Plaster Benefits

  • Thin Plaster:

Ultra-thin and flexible, moving with you like a second skin. Even with our Second Skin Protection XL plaster for larger wounds.
  • Flexible plaster:

Second Skin Protection will adapt to your movements, making it ideal for wounds in difficult-to-dress areas like knees, elbows, or fingers.
  • Fast Healing:

The hydrocolloid formula promotes faster healing through the innovative healing capsule technology.
  • 72hr + Protection:

Provides an extra-strong hold for at least 72 hours, ensuring uninterrupted wound healing.
  • Waterproof:

Topped with a waterproof yet breathable polyurethane backing, allowing you to swim, shower, and stay active without worrying about the plaster coming off.

When to use the Second Skin Protection Plaster and Dressing

The Elastoplast Second Skin Protection plaster is ideal for minor cuts, abrasions, and scratches. The Second Skin plaster can offer protection and healing to a variety of wounds in different settings.

When Should You Use Second Skin Protection?

Home: for minor burns, cuts and blisters that may occur around your home.
At the gym: for relief and protection of blisters on the feet caused by new workout routines
Offices: great for having as part of a medical first aid kit should any injuries occur
Schools: useful to have in first aid kits

When Should You Not Use Second Skin Protection?

  • Wounds with a big amount of exudate
  • Bleeding wounds
  • Replacement for stitches
  • Open wounds which require frequent inspection
  • Avoid using on infected wounds

Second Skin Protection Application

Applying a hydrocolloid plaster involves a similar method to a standard plaster application. Follow the steps below for proper application of our Second Skin Plasters.

How to Apply

STEP 1: After bleeding is stopped, remove the paper foil and apply the plaster directly on the wound.
STEP 2: Press the plaster on firmly, ensuring edges are properly sealed.
STEP 3: Remove application foil marked in red.

How to Remove

STEP 1: After healing, gently lift an edge of the plaster.
STEP 2: Grab the edge and remove the plaster by pulling sideways.
STEP 3: Keep on stretching the plaster until it is fully removed.

A hydrocolloid dressing usually lasts between 3 to 7 days. A good indication to know when to change the dressing is by seeing how far it has come up from the edges of the wound. However, this is not standard. So if you wonder how long you should leave a hydrocolloid dressing on, you should check it’s at least 70% full of wound exudate.

Frequently Asked Questions about Elastoplast's Second Skin Protection

  • Can I use Elastoplast Second Skin plasters for acne?

Yes, as they are hydrocolloid plasters, they will help create a moist environment to absorb drainage and help shield acne from bacteria. If acne persists, please seek advice from a healthcare professional.

  • Can I use Elastoplast Second Skin Protection on open wounds?

Yes, although please avoid if you experience bleeding or a big amount of exudate. If your open wound requires frequent inspection, it is best to avoid using. Always see a doctor if a wound is deep, bleeds heavily or shows signs of infection like reddening, swelling or warmth.

  • Why do Second Skin plasters turn white?

This is called a healing capsule. When the hydrocolloid particles (sodium carboxymethylcellulose) come into contact with wound fluid (exudate), they absorb the exudate and form a viscous gel which may be visible as a ‘healing capsule’, an opaque or white bubble that can appear over the wound.

  • Can I swim and play sports with Second Skin Protection plasters on?

Hydrocolloid plasters and dressings also contain polyurethane, which is a plastic material that makes them waterproof. Our Second Skin Plasters are waterproof and sweatproof, offering a great option without the need to change a dressing after a shower or swimming.
